Project Overview

Vasse Joint Venture (VJV), an arrangement between Westforce (66%) and JWI Contractors (34%), was awarded the contract by Water Corporation to upgrade more than 6km of the existing Vasse Diversion Drain (VDD) in Busselton, Western Australia.

The project addressed flooding risks and environmental concerns by enhancing the drain’s capacity and water management capabilities. The works included reconstruction of key drainage infrastructure, channel widening, and installation of new flow control structures to protect the surrounding community and sensitive wetland areas.

  • Temporary coffer dams, water flow management and flood protection
  • Removal and reconstruction of the Vasse River diversion dam (VRDD)

Construction of the Vasse River Overflow Structure (VROS) spillway with gated outlet

  • Widening of the VDD channel and levee reconstruction over 5km
  • Excavation of internal berms to increase waterway capacity
  • Scour protection works
  • Replacement of drainage culverts
  • Design and construction of 11.5m steel truss pedestrian bridge extension with connecting ramps
  • Upgrade of concrete-lined drain section (Ch820 to Ch1150), including wall height increase

The project was awarded the 2021 CCF WA Earth Award for Excellence in Civil Construction (projects valued $10M-$30M), recognising the successful delivery and technical complexity of the works.
