Project Overview

The Kwinana Battery Energy Storage System (KBESS) project is a 100MW/200MWh battery storage facility located at the Kwinana Power Station (KPS) site in Western Australia.

KBESS1 is Western Australia’s first large utility-scale battery project in the southwest, developed by SynergyRED and is a key factor in the state’s plan to transition to net zero. The system will absorb excess energy from rooftop solar when the sun is shining and release it in the evening, when demand peaks, providing additional security and stability to Western Australia’s power system.

Westforce delivered all civil works, concrete structures, earthworks, and drainage associated with the project, which includes but is not limited to:

  • Bulk earthworks
  • Concrete foundations
  • Cable culverts
  • Blue metal hardstand areas
  • Internal roads
  • Perimeter fencing and associated finishing works

These elements enable the subsequent installation and commissioning by Genus of the 330kV Substation Facility, BESS Facility, and associated infrastructure.

The concrete component of the scope by Westforce included footings, slabs, plinths, walls pedestals, pile foundations, precast culverts, and fire wall panels.

Bulk Earthworks: 14,400m³ ~
Concrete: 1,800m³ ~
Piles: 118
Battery Slabs: 32
MV Slabs: 32
PCS Slabs: 64
Batteries: 608
Imported Fill: 3,500m³ ~
Asphalt: 1,000m² ~ (30mm) and 3,000m² ~ (40mm)
