The Collie Battery Energy Storage System (CBESS1) is a cornerstone of Synergy’s transition from coal to renewable energy storage. Located near Collie Power Station in Western Australia, it will rank among the world’s largest battery systems, delivering up to 500MW.
Covering 40,000m², the facility comprises 640 containerised batteries and 160 inverters, scaled far beyond Synergy’s earlier Kwinana builds. SCEE engaged Westforce to complete all civil and concrete works, including substation infrastructure.
The works encompassed trenching, structural footings, and high-voltage interfaces, delivered in stages under tight sequencing requirements. Westforce’s self-perform capability and structured project systems ensured disciplined delivery across the scope.
Westforce delivered the full civil and structural works package under a construct-only contract model.
The scope included:
Bulk Earthworks: 25,000m³~
Detailed Earthworks: 10,000m³~
Internal Roads: 34km~Â
Concrete Structures: 13,500m³~
Trenching: 14,000m~
Drainage: 1,400m~Â
Precast Culverts: 7,300m~
Chip seal and Asphalt: 31,500m²~
