New Norcia, WA $7M ~ Thales Alenia Space France

START: October 2022 - FINISH: February 2024

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Thales Alenia Space France (TAS) is the lead contractor of the European Deep Antenna Alliance (E-DSA²), in charge of the NNO-3 Deep Space Antenna project for the European Space Agency (ESA). The project will provide a second Deep Space Antenna at ESA's existing New Norcia site, located in Western Australia.

The new generation 35-meter antenna will support ESA’s deep space missions and work together with other antennas in Argentina and Spain to provide uninterrupted communications with spacecraft exploring the Solar System, monitoring asteroid activity, and observing the sun to help protect our planet from hazardous events.

PROJECT SCOPE

Westforce completed its scope on the Project in February 2024. A six-month design-phase was followed by a 10-month construction phase.

The Westforce scope included:

  • Design of a thermally clad concrete tower structure incorporating installation of Azimuth and Seismic rings (rings designed and provided by others) and required to support the antenna dish, all to extremely tight tolerances
  • Foundation design requiring excavation to reach sound rock at depth, mass concrete infill, concrete ring beam and stabilized sand backfill
  • Structural design of the concrete tower itself incorporating ground slab, service trench, antenna equipment room and attic, mezzanine floor and access stairs as well as an adjoining entrance portico and “airco” shelter
  • Design of all mechanical and electrical services to support the facility including chillers and air handling units
  • Design of external civils comprising road access, concrete apron and drainage
  • Construction of the concrete tower, including all foundation works and installation of cast-ins for mirrors and the critical free-issued Azimuth and Seismic rings

Construction of the remaining scope items, being electrical, mechanical systems, external civil finishing works, entrance portico, “airco” structure and cladding—has been undertaken by other contractors directly appointed by TAS.

Westforce's scope specifically excluded anything related to the antenna (the dish) and the scientific instruments and equipment necessary for its operation.
